New Guide for Laundering Garments Made with Nomex® Now Available

As you may know, properly dyed and finished garments made with DuPont™ Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera® are inherently flame resistant, meaning the flame resistance is a permanent or inseparable attribute of the fibers and fabrics that cannot be washed out or worn away.

But did you know that thermal protection can be compromised if there are flammable contaminants, stains or soiling on the garment or fabric from which it is made?

New Guide for Laundering Garments Made with Nomex® Now AvailableThat's because even though garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera® are inherently flame-resistant, any flammable contaminants—such as oil or grease—that are not effectively removed from the garment can ignite and burn, thus increasing potential burn injury to the wearer.

Therefore, whether you choose to use commercial laundering, home laundering or dry cleaning for your garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera®, it is important to ensure that the techniques and products used achieve effective results in removing flammable contaminants.

To assist you with this critical task, we have developed a new Laundering Guide that is intended to provide general recommendations on conditions and products for laundering garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera®.

Laboratory evaluations have shown that the conditions and products discussed in this guide are effective in removing contaminants, stains and soils from garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera® while also minimizing the impact on colorfastness and wear life.

Every step of the process is addressed in this guide for both commercial and home laundering—from sorting and pretreating through washing, drying and finishing procedures. General guidelines are also provided for dry cleaning garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera® and for removing spots and other non-standard contaminants.

In addition, a source list for commercial laundering products is provided in the appendix to this new guide. It should be noted that the listing of products in this appendix does not indicate a DuPont endorsement. Other laundering products not listed in this appendix may also be acceptable to use on garments made with Nomex®, Nomex® MHP and Protera®. Other products that have not been tested but that belong to the same class of low-temperature, low-alkalinity, high surfactant-based products may also provide acceptable results.
